Escarpment Winery Of The Month

Hand Picked - Foot Stomped
The Escarpment Vineyard, was born out of a passion for Pinot Noir. It is based around 24 hectares of prime viticultural land nestled on the banks overlooking the Huangarua River, Martinborough. Much is close-planted in the latest clones of Pinot Noir, supported by plantings of Pinot Gris and lesser plantings of Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay. Escarpment vineyard is committed to sustainable winemaking and organic viticulture. The Escarpment Vineyard along with the Single vineyards Kiwa and Te Rehua have been accredited biogro status since 2019.

Referred to by various wine writers and authorities as everything from the ‘Prince of Pinot Noir’, the ‘Godfather of Pinot Noir’, a Pinot Noir ‘legend’, and ‘maestro’, winemaker Larry McKenna has built a solid reputation for understanding and gaining the best out of this typically stubborn and capricious grape.
The release of Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir 2005 heralded the arrival of one of New Zealand’s finest. A true reflection of both Martinborough’s unique terroir and the skills and experience of their winemaker.
In 2014 Larry was inducted to New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame in recognition of his major contribution to the New Zealand wine industry.

Larry has retired this year after an illustrious career, but he has been such a huge part of the Escarpment story, as well as the story of New Zealand Wine, that his name must be mentioned! But this year, Winemaker Tim Bourne has stepped up, taking the helm. And while he may have some pretty big shoes to fill ...we're excited to see what his next steps are in those shoes...
