The 2019 Scout Pinot Gris comes from two vineyards in Marlborough. The Alice Mills vineyard is located on the outskirts of Blenheim, while the Little Oasis vineyard is in the cooler Awatere Valley.
The fruit was harvested early to retain acidity and freshness. In the winery it was split into multiple parcels to help build complexity into the finished blend. 2/3rds of the juice was fermented with Chardonnay yeast in tank, while another portion was fermented wild with full solids in barrel and the remainder fermented on skins for ten days. The skin and wild ferment portions provide the texture and spice in the wine.
The wine definitely takes inspiration from northern Italy rather than Alsace and we think provides great refreshing drinking with a bit of interest on the palate. It’s a great wine to match with food or enjoy on a summer evening.
