The family winery Cantina Maragona has been run by Laura and Alessandro Cutolo since 2007. It is located in the middle of the Lugana growing area on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in the town of Pozzolengo. Vinted from 100% Turbiana, the Maragona Lugana is the winery's calling card - and for many connoisseurs this is the best standard Lugana on the market. It is a slender, lively and highly drinkable wine thanks to its excellent acidity and light structure.
The winery’s home, Lugana, a tiny region in Northern Italy, enjoys a temperate microclimate due to its proximity to Lake Garda. The calcerous clay soils, rich in minerals akin to Chablis, bring out the unique character of Turbiana wines, which beautifully reflect both the winemaker’s skill and the land’s essence.
Alessandro Cutolo, the humble owner and winemaker of Cantina Marangona, produces premium organic white wines from the indigenous Turbiana grape. This rare variety,
misunderstood as Trebbiano until recently, finds its true identity through Alessandro’s craft.
This wine is what Alessandro refers to as ‘the soul of his estate’- Marangona’s Organic Lugana is 100% ‘Turbiana,’ or Trebbiano di Lugana, grown using a ‘double arc’ cordon from vines planted between 1980 and 2000 in clay/silt soils. The grapes are picked by hand and pressed as whole clusters, followed by fermentation at cool temperatures. Once fermentation is complete the wine is aged on its fine lees for 4 months before being bottled early in the following year.
