Before the Auckland Skytower, the pinnacle of Aotearoa’s expansive skyline was the New Plymouth Power Station’s Chimney Stack, climbing a lofty 198m into the clouds. Situated next to Port Taranaki, and just down the road from the condom factory, this whopping structure was completed in 1972 with a continuous pour of concrete and still remains the second highest man-made structure in the country.
The chimney was a flue to the power station’s thermal energy, relying on Taranaki’s abundant supply of natural gas and oil. Now redundant, the chimney remains in place as the only way to remove it would be to push it into the ocean.
