Rob Burley found his place in the wine world after working for a number of great like-minded producers abroad but it wasn’t until he moved to Australia and started to work for Bill Downie and Patrick Sullivan that the concept for Unkel Wines was born. He and his wife Kate recently returned to NZ to take over an organic estate near Nelson and this is his first vintage from the homeland.
Seems like it’s near impossible to find a low intervention organic Chardonnay that’s got balance at the moment; they seem to be either 11% abv and under-ripe or 14% and completely over-oaked. Enter ‘Lost Your Way’ from Rob. Kaimira vineyard fruit, hand harvested, whole bunch pressed into old French barriques and just one new Puncheon (large format 500L). It went through malo naturally and was kept on gross lees right up until bottling. No fining, no filtration, just a small amount of sulphur added at bottling. Beautiful and fine, nicely rounded and with great texture from the lees-aging. Really pronounced fruit flavour and development. It's the kind of bottle you can drink in one minute flat, or sit back and enjoy slowly, peeling back layer after layer.
