Steve Davies is a rare Central Otago winemaker because he not only makes his on wine but also grows the grapes on a beautiful elevated three hectare vineyard in Bannockburn, which is right on the backstep of his home. He named his vineyard Doctors Flat, in homage to the doctor who lived there during the gold rush of the mid 1800s.

The schist vineyard is entirely devoted to Pinot Noir and production is small scale. Schist soils are a result of glacial ice deposited 480,000 years ago and which today provide heat retention for grapes to ripen as well as good drainage. His wine is made from hand harvested Pinot Noir, a portion of which was whole bunch fermented in small tanks with indigenous yeast then drained to French oak barrels (23% new) and matured for 12 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.

This is one of our favorite Central Otago Pinot Noirs every year and quality is consistently rising as Davies gets to grips with refining his grape growing and winemaking every year - a constant quest for this outstanding Otago winemaker.
