No one knows why it was called a ParrotDog; but a ParrotDog has always been what it is.
Beginning at the beginning; there were two characters named Matt who were just really into nice beer. After a spell of sampling various craft beer styles together one Wellington summer, the duo became inspired to try and make beer that tasted good; like the ones they were drinking.
So it goes; they got to homebrewing out of the basement of their dingy Aro Valley flat and it was surprising – they could produce a fairly drinkable beverage.
On a student budget, and after joining forces to share costs, they started developing what would become the first commercial ParrotDog beer recipe – an India Pale Ale.
Adding another man named Matt to the mix, a contract brew went down in Taranaki and long story short; the report was not good, too bitter – they were told to dump it.

Legend to the contrary, BitterBitch turned out to be a hit.

From smuggling flagons into local beer events, to delivering kegs in between classes – ParrotDog was going well when the charm of reality hit – they needed more space to brew more beer.
The commitment was made and out of a huge empty space the brewery was born in the heart of Wellington city. Things are ticking along nicely. So nicely in fact that the Parrotdog team have recently crowdedfunded themselves (in what has to be record time – $2Million in 2 days) into their exciting next step!

From mere beverage to craft quality – at the end of the day, it’s all very well and good.
…so good we wanted to share their beer with you!

We are currently waiting with baited breath for our next free tap (which we are expecting to free itself up tonight…), on which we will feature the Bitterbitch IPA first, and many more!

In the meantime, Take advantage of the awesome bottle deals we have for you!

Parrotdog Bitterbitch

The troublesome original release, named for the problematic first brew day which hugely emphasised its hop bitterness. It’s matured and evolved nicely over the years, with us. Big tropical hop flavour from local varieties with strong bitterness from an English hop to honour its origins, all balanced by plenty of malt.

Parrotdog Dead Canary

Coal, processed into ‘coke’, made modern pale ale a lot easier to make; controllable, smokeless heat gives brewers malts that are paler in colour and milder in taste. Those malts, balanced by fruity New Zealand hops, make this beer everything that coal-mining isn’t: it’s bright, easy-going, and restoring.

Parrotdog Bloodhound

Strong and even-tempered like its dependable namesake. A rich and hearty blood-red ale with hints of toast and roast from those darker malts, accented by lush New Zealand hops. Substantial but surprisingly approachable, it’s particularly excellent company on colder days but there for you any time.

Parrotdog Pandemonium Pilsner

A murder of crows, a parliament of owls, and a pandemonium of parrots. Parrotdog’s first-ever lager took flight among the ‘new world’ pilsners which put lively modern hop varieties onto the crisp, light and refreshing body of the classics. Easy and approachable but still very satisfying.

Parrotdog Clipped Wing

Take the assertive deliciousness of an American Pale Ale and tame it — but just a little, not too much. Bold U.S. hop flavours are still in full effect and its strength has been very carefully trimmed to keep the delicate balance of malt intact.

Parrotdog Flora Series: Wood Rose American IPA 500mL

The Flora IPA series is an opportunity to focus on what is a favourite beer ingredient for many; the hop plant. As part of a full re-brand of Parrotdog’s current limited release offerings, they created an extension to thier conservational efforts in building awareness for New Zealand’s native flora and fauna by focusing on a beer style that emphasises the botanical ingredient used in our beers. The third in our Flora IPA Series, Wood Rose (formerly PitBull), is available now in 500ml bottles.
In the 1970s, American microbrewers reinvigorated IPA and spurred an ongoing obsession. The overt floral and grapefruit notes of the Cascade hop made the world take notice. We’ve used it here, together with the pine-resin character of other classic U.S. varieties, to salute the old school.
Was $10.50
Now $9.50

The rest of the Flora Series are currently being brewed again at the moment, and will be available mid September – look out for more of these both in bottle, and on our taps!!
